[In Person] Create Games with Scratch

Ages 8 - 12

Design and program video games using Scratch! Scratch is a programming language built by MIT that is specifically designed to make programming fun and easy. Students will start with the hour of code and then build several simple games to learn the ins and outs of how to program with Scratch. By the end of the class, students will have originally designed video games to share with friends and family!

[In Person] Intro to 3D Printing & Laser Cutting

Ages 9 - 12

Learn to design and build original objects using The DAE's 3D printers and laser cutter! Using TinkerCAD, a free and powerful 3D design program, students will create originally designed models, parts, and more. From action figures to boxes with hinged lids, the only limit is your creativity! Students will also use TinkerCAD and Adobe Illustrator to create beautiful engravings and originally designed parts of wood and acrylic using our laser cutter.

Become a digital comic artist! Students will start by working with their instructor and their peers to create their own original characters and stories. They will then create basic storyboards of their comics. Once their storyboards are complete, they will create their comics digitally using digital drawing software and digital drawing tablets.

[In Person] Minecraft City Builders

Ages 8 - 12

What makes for the perfect city? Is it a city with no traffic? One with the tallest buildings? In this class, you’ll get to design and build the perfect city… in Minecraft! Students will explore cities and what they require to function. They will look at existing towns and cities and explore what could be improved. Then, they will design and build their perfect cities in Minecraft down to every detail.

Students are welcome to use their own Minecraft account, but The DAE will provide Minecraft accounts to any students who need them.

[In Person] Start Coding with Java

Ages 12+

Learn the basics of Java by creating amazing interactive projects! Java is the most commonly used programming language in the world - even Minecraft was programmed in Java! This class will explore Java using Processing, a program used to create graphics with code. From creating simple drawings to interactive animated projects, this class will provide a solid foundation in coding with Java. Students should expect to complete a variety of projects during this class.

Ages 9 - 12

Create interactive text adventure games, quizzes, and more with Python. Python is an ideal starter language because it is easy to write, easy to read, and is used in the real world. In fact, the entire backend of YouTube is written in Python! Students will start with writing simple projects to develop familiarity with the language and move onto creating interactive text-based games and even drawing with code!

Ages 9 - 12

Running a YouTube channel is fun and not as difficult as you may think! Students will explore different styles of YouTube videos and decide what style they would each like to use for their channel. The class will then learn how to shoot and edit awesome videos with Davinci Resolve, a free and powerful video editing program. Finally, students will explore the process of uploading, tagging, properly labeling, and creating thumbnails for their videos!

Please note, gaming videos are acceptable to create in this class, but any screen recording of games should be done at home and not during class time.

[In Person] Animate 3D Models with Blender

Ages 12+

Learn the basics of how movies like Toy Story, The Incredibles, Ice Age, and more were created! Using Blender, a free and powerful 3D Animation program, students will explore the basics of modeling, lighting, and texturing 3D objects. Starting with several simple projects, students will explore the essential tools in Blender and move on to model more complex objects, like spaceships! Students can expect to complete several 3D models in this class.
